"The English language is nobody’s special property. It is the property of the imagination: it is the property of the language itself." - Derek Walcott
The study of English Language is integral to the communication process. We know that students will not be able to go on to further education or procure a decent apprenticeship without a qualification in English, and so we help to ensure that every student who passes through our doors obtains a qualification. We offer studies in both Key stage 3 and Key stage 4.
At CUL Academy, we pursue two courses in the study of English Language: Functional and GCSE Level.
For Functional Skills, studies are timetabled a number of times per week to ensure that competencies are enhanced. Reading and Writing examinations are done online, while Speaking, Listening and Communication assessments are done as group discussions, under strict examination conditions.
GCSE English Language and English Literature are done by our students, resulting in good outcomes. We are embracing the changes in the curriculum by doing research, attending meetings with other English Departments and having ongoing communication with other teachers of English.
Our goal is to see every student passing English with Grades 5-8. It may seem daunting, but many of our students are ‘able’ and if we can encourage and enable them, they will do well. To this end, we have placed English on the timetable at least four times per week, in lessons that last for one hour.
Students are encouraged to read from the wide variety of books found in each classroom in form time, and discussions with mentors/ teachers and peers are common occurrences, both inside and outside of classes. Students are challenged to do research and listen to the news as ways to acquire information for discussions.
We are resolute in our dedication to give of our best so that our students achieve!
